A man from Pumula North in Bulawayo is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital after he was attacked by two suspected illegal miners with a knobkerrie fitted with nails following a misunderstanding over ladies of the night at a local sports bar.

Sunday News visited Nhlanhla Tshuma last week but he could not talk as he was in pain. His brother who refused to be named as he is afraid of the assailants, however, said the suspected muggers beat up his brother and dumped him in an open ground.

He said Nhlanhla was drinking beer at Ezasekasi Sports Bar last Sunday when the misunderstanding arose.

“I was not there by that time, I had left for home from the bar, my brother was beaten up by illegal miners who followed him up after a drink, he was seriously injured and was dumped on the ground,” said the brother.

The brother said Nhlanhla was attacked using a knobkerrie fitted with nails on its head and a sharp bottle. Nhlanhla sustained cuts on his head and was taken to Mpilo unable to speak or walk. The brother said they were now waiting for X-rays to determine the extent of the damage suffered by Nhlanhla.

“He is slowly getting well but he still needs to go for an X-ray, unfortunately the service is currently not available at Mpilo and private doctors said they need $1 000,” he said.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident.

“They were fighting over ladies of the night. We urge people not to resort to violence but rather deal with differences amicably,” Insp Ncube said.
